Problem: Energy Gap

In the presence of a weak periodic potential, tex2html_wrap_inline6165 , the energy band of the one-dimensional free-electron gas will develop an energy gap of magnitude tex2html_wrap_inline6007 . The gap will open at wavenumbers tex2html_wrap_inline6169 , and around the energy tex2html_wrap_inline6171 .gif Calculate the density of states, assuming that the gap is much smaller than tex2html_wrap_inline5145 . (For the purpose of this calculation the two branches of the unperturbed energy spectrum can be approximated by tex2html_wrap_inline6175 , where tex2html_wrap_inline6177 is the group velocity of the electrons. The unperturbed density of states is constant, tex2html_wrap_inline6179 .)
