Problem: Soft Optical Phonons

A linear chain consists of polarizable molecules which are separated by lattice spacing a. The molecules are fixed to their position, but they have an internal degree of freedom described by the equation of motion

  equation1591

where p is the electric dipole moment of the molecule (assumed to be parallel to the chain), E is the local electric field, and tex2html_wrap_inline5131 is the polarizability. Each molecule feels the electric field of the others. The system is at zero temperature, and quantum effects are small. Calculate and plot the dispersion curve tex2html_wrap_inline5857 for small amplitude polarization waves (optical phonons). Discuss the behavior of tex2html_wrap_inline5925 as a function of tex2html_wrap_inline5131 ?
