Problem: Damped Oscillation

In a linear chain of lattice spacing a, particles of mass m are connected by first-neighbor springs of spring constant tex2html_wrap_inline5823 . In addition to the elastic forces, each particle is subjected to a damping force tex2html_wrap_inline5891 , where tex2html_wrap_inline5821 is the displacement of the nth particle from the equilibrium position, and tex2html_wrap_inline5897 is its velocity. How does the damping change the frequencies tex2html_wrap_inline5899 , and what is the relaxation time of the modes? Assume tex2html_wrap_inline5901 and discuss the tex2html_wrap_inline5903 and tex2html_wrap_inline5905 modes separately.
